Deep bite

Deep bites are an over growth of the upper front teeth over the lower front teeth. Teeth normally continue to grow until they contact an opposing tooth. In a deep bite situation, the upper front teeth are positioned too far forward and so don't contact the lower teeth until they grow much further down.

Causes of deep bites can be developmental, as in the upper jaw growing faster or further than the lower jaw. They may be caused by oral habits, such as thumb sucking or may have genetic causes.

Deep bites can lead to periodontal (gum) problems, as the lower front teeth can actually bite into the gum on the inside of the upper teeth. They can cause accelerated wear of the teeth as well as jaw joint problems (TMJ syndrome) where the joints become tender.
